Measuring for a desk pad before you buy one

Desk pads are the item most often returned for size, and almost always because the desk was never measured.

Measure the usable surface

Measure the flat area you actually work on, not the outside of the desk. Cable trays, monitor feet and a raised back edge all reduce it.

The number you want is width and depth of clear space, taken with everything currently on the desk pushed aside.

Leave a margin

A pad that reaches the exact edge looks fitted until you rest your forearms on it and it starts creeping. Two or three inches of desk showing on each side is more stable and looks deliberate.

That margin also stops the edge lifting where you get in and out.

The two common sizes

Around 24 by 14 inches suits a laptop and a mouse. Around 55 by 24 covers a full monitor, keyboard and mouse together and effectively resurfaces the desk.

Anything between those is usually a compromise that fits neither task well.

Thickness and edge

Thicker pads sit flatter and resist curling, particularly if they have been rolled for shipping. A stitched or sealed edge lasts much longer than a cut one.

Rolled pads take a day or two to settle; laying them flat under books speeds it up.

Surface for the mouse

Most PU leather pads track fine for optical mice. Very glossy surfaces and glass do not, so if you use an older mouse check before committing.

A dedicated mouse area is only necessary if you are gaming, not for office work.

Cleaning

PU wipes clean with a damp cloth. Avoid solvents, which lift the coating and leave a dull patch that does not recover.

Felt-topped pads need brushing rather than wiping, and stain more readily.

When a pad is the wrong answer

If the problem is cable clutter or a shortage of space, a pad hides it rather than fixing it. An organiser or a monitor riser is the better buy.

A pad solves surface comfort, noise and appearance. It does not create room.

Where this sits in the shop

Jason Office Products groups its range into 6 sections, so it is usually quicker to start from the group than to scroll the whole shop. These are the ones with stock on the shelf right now:

If none of those is obviously right, the full shop lists everything on one page.

What it costs

Across the 19 items currently listed, prices run from $5.97 to $35.99, with the middle of the range around $9.99. That spread is worth knowing before you start comparing, because the cheapest and dearest options here are usually not the same kind of product at all.

Shipping is a flat $4.99 per order and free once the order reaches $35.00, which is set out in full on the Shipping Policy page.

The FAQ page covers the rest.
